Silver Spoon Assessment

1. What is your reaction to the text you just read?
My initial reaction to this manga was rather positive. Silver Spoon seems to be a very lighthearted slice of life series and has some comedy mixed in with it. The protagonist is relatable, being that he makes his decisions based on his laziness. All nice things aside, my main gripe with Silver Spoon is how Tamako is treated by other students in the manga. It seems like her only personality trait is that she’s overweight and she ends up in the butt of the joke every time she’s mentioned. Body positivity has always seemed to be an issue in manga and anime due to Japanese standards, especially for women. Despite that, it’s not going to completely prevent me from continuing this series. Silver Spoon is a cute and fun read that doesn’t seem like it would have any depressing elements within it.

2. What connections did you make with the story? Discuss the elements of the work with which you were able to connect.
I was mainly able to connect Silver Spoon with any other typical slice of life series, since the manga takes place in a normal everyday school, even if the setting diverts away from the typical high school environment due to the fact it specializes in agriculture. The protagonist is like many others, where he’s just sort of lazy and doesn’t really have a solid grip on what he wants to do with his life. He has a relatable outlook on lifestyle. Another element that I found familiar was the obvious female love interest, which was the girl who invited him to be in the Equestrian Club. The protagonist seems to see an appeal to her, and she was also the first girl he ever encountered in the series, so I can see from the get go that these two characters are going to have moments together.

3. What changed would you make to adapt this story into another medium? What medium would you use? What changes would make?
I think the clear answer to this would be adapting Silver Spoon into an anime series. It was already adapted into an anime series, but I would personally make a couple changes to the beginning of the series so things are more clarified. It took me a while to really understand the main reason why the protagonist decided to come to this school of agriculture when it’s totally out of his interests. It was somewhat established that he joined the school because it had dormitories, but I feel like there has to be more to that. I initially thought he joined the school because he got lost in the beginning and he just got wrapped up into attending this high school that was nearby.
